amir and his first collection

By Wellness, The Next Big Thing

amir hazif is the eldest of 4 siblings. I wanted him to cultivate the interest in numismatic so that he could understand the creation and evolution of money. In January 2008, we lined-up in the Central Bank of Malaysia at 8am in the morning just to get a new issue of RM50 banknote. As each person was allowed to buy a piece each, we had to queue twice to get 4 pieces of RM50. There was also a group of Bangladeshi factory workers of 35-40 nos. unboarding a blue factory bus and lined-up to get new notes. Later I learned that it was the factory owner, an avid banknote collector, who instructed his workers to buy a piece each from the bank ...... ha .. ha .. ha

The Value Of 1 Cent

By Wellness, The Next Big Thing

1 cent coins have been in circulation for many years until late 2007 when feasibility studies revealed that the actual production costs eg. from mines exploration, mining, production of coins exceeded the face value of 1 cent coin itself. The actual value was 4.5 cents. Central Bank of Malaysia (Bank Negara Malaysia) then decided to abolish 1 cents in the market. As the Vice President of the Society, I was given an honor to make a public statement in a local newspaper in parallel to the BNM announcement.

Mother of All Banknotes

By Wellness, The Next Big Thing

This is a 1931 Straits Settlement, King George V, 1 dollar circulated banknote. This is a piece of printing art. Why ... imagine back in 1931 when camera and sophisticated printing technology did not exist. Highly skilled crafstmen were hired to produce intricate and very fine metal moulds just to make banknotes. The value was not on the face of the note but in the processes and end products, instead. So, any taker for this beauty at RM3,888?

Article In Local Daily

By Wellness, The Next Big Thing

This article appeared in The STAR newspaper in 2006 about my hobby. Local dailies were still the best means to spread information as they covered wide range of readers especially the older ages who were not very much in ICT.

Society meeting

By Wellness, The Next Big Thing

It all started from an idea. An article about my hobby in banknotes collection was published in The STAR daily in 2006. Since then, banknote collectors from as far as Perlis and Sarawak contacted me and we became friends. My circle of friends was expanding until Mohammad Jamal (in red) suggested that we form a society. We set our first meeting in August 2007 in Kelana Jaya and the rest was history.
