1 cent coins have been in circulation for many years until late 2007 when feasibility studies revealed that the actual production costs eg. from mines exploration, mining, production of coins exceeded the face value of 1 cent coin itself. The actual value was 4.5 cents. Central Bank of Malaysia (Bank Negara Malaysia) then decided to abolish 1 cents in the market. As the Vice President of the Society, I was given an honor to make a public statement in a local newspaper in parallel to the BNM announcement.
